What are the Symptoms of MS?

MS is a very variable condition, affecting different people in different ways. The symptoms are caused by areas of myelin loss – lesions – within the central nervous system, and depend on the location and size of the lesions. Some people with MS will be virtually symptom-free, while others experience varying degrees of disability.

The symptoms affecting the individual vary according to the function of the nerves that become damaged. No one knows why lesions develop, and there is no particular pattern to their appearance. When you are diagnosed with MS it is impossible for your doctor to tell you what symptoms you may develop in the future or how much the disease will disrupt your life.
