Benign MS

About 20% of people diagnosed with MS will experience only a few attacks and make a complete recovery from each one. The attacks peter out leaving either no permanent after-effects or a minimal level of impairment. MS cannot be classified as benign until at least 10-15 years have elapsed, as it initially appears the same as the relapsing-remitting form. However, benign MS tends to have milder symptoms right from the start, and these are usually of a sensory nature. In a few people the disease remains benign for many years but then returns in a more serious form. The exact number of people with benign MS is not known.
