Working with Healthcare Professionals
MS is a very variable condition and symptoms can come and go. When you see any healthcare professional you need to talk about how you are at different times, not just how you are on the day of the appointment. These tips may help you make the most of your appointments:
- Work on developing a good relationship with your GP. They play an important part in getting you the care that you need
- If there is an MS specialist nurse in your area, ask to be referred
- When you are having a bad day, make a note of your symptoms. You can use this when you go to see your doctor or specialist to tell them honestly how you feel
- Write down any questions you have before your appointment. Don’t be afraid to take your list of questions out during the appointment and make notes if you need to
- Don’t be afraid to speak up – your views are important too
- If you decide to use complementary or alternative therapies always tell the practitioner you have MS
- Complementary or alternative therapies can be expensive. If you are not getting any benefit from them, stop. You may have to try several treatments, one at a time, to find one that works for you
