Copolymer-1
Copolymer-1
Copolymer-1 (glatiramer acetate) is a synthetic protein that resembles part of the protein found in myelin. It is thought to suppress attacks on myelin by the immune system, and has been shown to reduce the relapse rate in people with relapsing-remitting MS, especially in the early stages. Its effect on progressive MS is still being studied. Copolymer-1 is taken by daily injection.
Side-effects
Some patients may experience one or some of the following symptoms:
- Dizziness, light headedness, chest tightness or palputations following injections. These symptoms tend to disappear quite quickly with no long lasting effects
- Some patients may also experience skin reactions at the injection site
- It should not be taken by women who are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breast feeding, as its effects on the developing baby are unknown and it may increase the chances of miscarriage
